Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani is one of the few businessmen in Zambia who have been able to keep their image as a transparent and ethical businessmen despite the significant corruption and unethical practices across every aspect of business in Zambia. Dr. Rajan Mahtani has been able to establish his name not only in successful business practice but also a culture or transparency, authenticity, honesty. Furthermore, he is also known for his significant philanthropic contributions towards the economic, social and environmental development of the Zambian society and its people. Dr. Mahtani’s philanthropic and charitable contributions can be found across different sectors and areas. One of these areas is education where Dr. Mahtani made significant contributions.
After the sad demise of his close friend Steven Malama, Dr. Rajan Mahtani decided to honour his significant contributions within the legal society of Zambia. This was achieved by establishing the Steven Malama award which is given to the top graduating student from the Zambia Institute of Advanced Legal Education. The award is given every year to the student graduating at top position from the Institute as well as qualifying for bar in their first attempt. Each student receives a plaque and a cash prize of K18500 which is a significant financial contribution for the future endeavours of the winning graduates.
Recently, this philanthropic contribution from Dr. Mahtani was published at the ‘Readers Forum’ section of the Daily Mail Newspaper. In this section, the latest winner of the Steven Malama award praised Dr. Rajan Mahtani for his significant contributions towards not only improving the legal education in Zambia but also providing the hardworking students with the opportunity to achieve their dreams. Despite the numerous challenges faced by Dr. Rajan Mahtani on his reputation and his businesses, he is never shying away from contributing towards the development of Zambia and its people.
