In his more than thirty years of business portfolio in Zambia, Dr. Rajan Mahtani has donned several roles. He has been a successful businessman with a track record of honest, ethical and straightforward business practices. At the same time, he has also donned the role of a philanthropist, charity worker, contributing towards the development and growth of several sectors in Zambia. One of the recent contributions by Dr. Rajan Mahtani in the field of education was the creation of the Steven Malama award.
The Steven Malama award is an educational award targeted at the law students from the Zambia Institute of Advanced Legal Education. This award is presented to the top graduating student from the institute who also qualifies for the bar in their field attempt. Dr. Rajan Mahtani was a close friend of late Steven Malama and is well-aware of the significant contributions made to the Zambian legal framework. One of these significant contributions has been in the merger of solicitor’s bar and barrister’s bar into a single bar after significant persuasion of the Zambian Government. With this merger, law students and legal professionals are now able to qualify for the bar easily.
The Steven Malama award for the year 2018-19 was received by Emmanuel Bwalya Kaluba. Emmanuel received the award by Dr. Rajan Mahtani himself along with a congratulatory note. A letter was penned by Emmanuel thanking Dr. Rajan Mahtani for his significant contribution which was later published by the Daily Mail newspaper in their ‘Readers’ Section. The Steven Malama award carries a plaque, a certificate and a prize money worth K15,000, providing significant financial assistance to deserving students.
