Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani is a noted businessman, philanthropist and charity worker in Zambia. In his business ventures spanning more than three decades, Dr. Rajan Mahtani not only developed successful business practices but also engaged in significant philanthropic and charitable activities.
Dr. Rajan Mahtani is the chairman of Finance Bank Zambia and after several discussions with the board members, Dr. Rajan Mahtani established the Steven Malama Award in the year 2012. This award was established for honouring Steven Malama, a noted legal professional and visionary in the Zambian legal system. Steven Malama is noted for being a distinct legal professional with several accolades. One of his most significant contributions has been persuading the government of Zambia For merger of two distinct bars, the Solicitors bar and Barristers Bar, into a single bar. This merger has been significantly helpful for legal practitioners who can now get affiliation rom anywhere in the nation. Previously, this opportunity was not available for the legal professionals as the separate bars were not available together, apart from few selected placed. As a result, Steven Malama is considered as a role model and pioneer among his colleagues as well as upcoming legal generation of Zambia.
The first award was presented in the year 2013 and since then it is a regular affair now. The award is given every year to the top graduating student from the ZIALE (Zambia Institute of Advanced Legal Education who also qualifies for the bar in their first attempt. The recipient of the award for the year 2018-19 was Emmanuel Bwalya Kaluba whose article thanking Dr. Mahtani for his philanthropic achievements was published by the Daily Mail.
