Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani has never been the one to depend on rumours, unethical judgements or the mercy of others for getting this done. He is one of the most respected and celebrated self-made businessmen in Zambia with several top companies such as Mahtani Group of Companies, Finsbury Investments and several other national and international entities. His companies have all remained true to his business standings and despite the political, economic and legal challenges of the Zambian nations, these companies have turned out to be profitable and top employers across Zambia. As a result, when justice Nkonde on behalf of the Lusaka High Court gave a judgement which was controversial and misdirected, it did not deter Dr. Mahtani’s determination and he approached the higher Court of Appeal.
The Court of Appeal is among the highest level legal and judiciary system in Zambia and as a result, hopes were high for the case. The judge at the higher Court of Appeal was justice Mwinde and after looking into all evidences and testimonials submitted before the court, the final decision was announced on 31st January 2019. Unlike the previous judge who kept everything closed and confused, justice Mwinde made numerous evidences associated with the case public. For instance, one major evidence was transfer of one billion kwachas from Dr. Mahtani-owned Finsbury Investment to the Portland Cement Zambia. This payment covered for the 58 percent share capital value of the factory which Dr. Mahtani took over from the factory. Based on these evidences, it was announced that Dr. Rajan Mahtani is the actual owner of the factory.
